Kollenborn, Tom. Legends of Superstition Mountain. 1998, 1995, c1982. This is the best short introduction you will find. A very good summary of key points about Jacob Waltz and about the history of the spread of the legend. The information about Bicknell, for example, is very important (to follow this, see Davis, Kearny, and Blair). A great place to start. All of Kollenborn's stuff is good. There is a nice modified version of this publication on the web, take a look.
